If you love seeing lots of color in your garden during the early days of Spring, now is the time to plant those Fall bulbs! Once the night temperatures start dipping into the 40's or 50's, it's time to get the bulbs in the ground. Planting in Fall allows the bulbs to winter over and develop excellent blooms for Spring.
Spring blooming bulbs can be planted almost anywhere you want depending on the style of your garden. Planting in clusters gives a more natural look while planting in neat rows creates a more formal look in the Spring. Bulbs need to be in an area where the soil drains properly (since bulbs don't like wet feet and they prefer plenty of sunshine)! Bulbs aren't only for planting in the garden...try planting them in containers for your yard or home!
Before you plant the bulbs, you will want to make sure the ground is loosened up and the soil is amended with compost and peat moss (if need be). You can also add a fertilizer like Dutch Bulb food or bone meal, which we have in stores. One of the most asked questions is 'How deep do you plant a...?' Most bulbs will come with a planting guide giving this information and how far apart to space the bulbs. As a general rule of thumb, plant the bulbs pointy side up approximately 3-4 times as deep as the bulb is tall. After planting, you will want to go ahead and water the bulbs to initiate their growth.Come see us to pick out your Fall bulbs today!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4e6MUag2xrA
