While we don’t get to plant our gardens yet, we can certainly start the planning process early! Will you stick to the tried-and-true herbs and veggies, or will you try something new this year? Deciding what to plant is step one, but once you’ve done that, a creative way to prepare for planting season is by making your very own super cute garden markers! These are a few of our favorite methods.
Wine cork garden markers are cute and a perfect way to repurpose something that would otherwise be tossed in the trash! If you’re looking for an easy DIY, then this is the craft for you because the materials you need are simply a handful of corks, some wood skewers, and a sharpie. The natural look of cork looks great on its own, or you could try painting them if desired. Scribble out the name of what you intend to grow in your neatest handwriting, and there you go! Finish off by pushing the wooden skewers into the corks, and your DIY markers are ready for the garden.
Considering that you can only use canning lids once, this is a great project that allows your used lids to serve another purpose. What you’ll need are scissors, popsicle sticks, canning lids, lacquer spray paint, glue, and your seed packets.Seed packets often feature a lovely image of the food you’re growing, so why not use it as part of your garden marker? Of course, if you’re doing this before planting season, you will need to store your seeds in some other type of sealed and labeled container.Using the canning lid as a stencil, trace a circle with a pencil on the seed packet. Cut out the circle from the packet, glue it to the front of the lid, then glue the stick to the back of the lid. You could paint the popsicle sticks in fun colors as an extra step! Finish your new garden markers by coating them with lacquer spray paint to seal them and help protect against weather.
These markers are a super cute way to organize your garden! Maybe you have some inherited antique spoons collecting dust in a drawer somewhere, but if not, it gives you an excuse to head out to an antique store for an afternoon! Once you have your spoons, the other items you’ll need are a hammer, rubber mallet, nail file, a sharpie and metal letter stamps that you can find at a craft store. We recommend that you do this craft on a hard, flat surface that won’t sustain damage when you use the hammer. The floor of a garage or concrete steps might work best. Place a towel on the surface (so that the spoon doesn’t get scratched), and then place your spoon face down on the towel. Using the rubber mallet, hammer your spoon until it’s flat.Next, spell out your word and make small, evenly spaced dots with a sharpie on the spoon. The dots will give you an idea of where to place your stamps—don’t worry, the dots can be removed and won’t ruin the look of your garden markers!Begin stamping your letters, starting with a middle letter first; that way, you can center your letters across the spoon. Hit the back of the stamp with your hammer. Be careful not to hit the stamp too hard, or you may leave an imprint of the outer edge of the stamp as well. After you’ve stamped all your letters, fill them in with the sharpie to make them legible.Lastly, buff your new garden marker in a gentle, circular motion using a nail file. The buffing should be enough to remove the permanent marker dots and any other sharpie marks that may have gotten outside of the stamp. Wipe your garden markers with a damp cloth to remove any dust and residue, and ta-da! You now have some cute new additions to look forward to adding to your future garden.
