Helleborus

Helleborus is also known as Lenten Rose because they bloom around the beginning of Lent.  These plants are evergreen and deer resistant.  They add interest to the winter garden with their long lasting blooms.  They are low maintenance evergreen perennials that can tolerate shade, and they flower before the snow melts.  These plants are the perfect plant to liven up your winter garden!

‍Flowering‍

Most Hellebores bloom in early winter in areas that have mild climates, and others bloom in late winter or very early spring in areas where the ground freezes hard. Helleborus plants provide excellent winter interest for the garden with their gorgeous blooms during the colder months.

Though they do not usually need to be divided for the health of the plant, you can transplant them in September.FertilizingIn early Spring, apply a light application of balanced or slow-release fertilizer or side-dress with compost and organic amendments when new growth appears.  Prune back old foliage to make room for new growth.  In mid-Spring, all you need to do is monitor the soil and water as needed.  During late Spring, remove old flower stems as they fade and deadhead (if you don't wish to have seedlings).  By Summer, you will want to start cleaning out any unwanted seedlings that have sprouted and remove any yellow or dying leaves.

‍Insects

‍Helleborus plants are typically low maintenance, easy plants. However, they are at risk of fungal diseases, aphids, and and slug or snail damage.  Plants can be sprayed with a contact pesticide containing insecticidal soap and Pyrethrin to help control aphids; another solution is to release predatory ladybugs in your garden. To control slug and snail damage, use baits or diatomaceous earth.
