Landscape Design

Who says night owls can’t enjoy their gardens too? Moon gardens are a spectacular sight to behold—they glow in the light of the moon, creating a perfect backdrop for outdoor entertaining or quiet nights on the patio with a glass of wine. If you’d like to plant your own moon garden here in Arkansas, we’ve got some great recommendations for perennial plants that will keep coming back year after year.

The Best Perennial Flowers and Plants for a Moon Garden

So, how do you make your moon garden glow in the moonlight? The secret is to plant white flowers and plants! They reflect the light beautifully, creating a soft, moonlit glow across the landscape. It’s positively dreamy! Here are the best options for your moon garden—keep in mind that many of these plants are available in a wide range of colors, so when you visit the garden center, be sure to look for specifically white varieties!

White Butterfly Bush

The delicate white blooms of this perennial are so lovely, with arching spikes of flowers that are a delight for both you and the butterflies. It’s great for supporting pollinators in your garden, plus it adds unique visual interest. It’s a fast grower, reaching full maturity in just a single growing season, and it’s resistant to harsh environments, weather conditions, and pests. This plant knows no stress, and neither will you while enjoying it during your night-time garden gazing.

White Echinacea

White Echinacea is a perfect variety for a daisy-like aesthetic, with pronounced discs that are iconic to the Echinacea plant. These flowers bring little rays of moonlight to your garden, but Echinacea also has many healing properties that support the immune system and can help reduce symptoms of a cold or sore throat! This perennial is drought tolerant and blooms in the early summer, perfect for a summer solstice moon garden.

White English Roses

Bring an air of drama and romance to the scenery with some classic white English roses—they’re nothing short of breathtaking! Varieties like ‘Claire Austin’ have crisp, snow-white petals with a subtle sheen, ideal for reflecting the soft light of the moon. Be sure to plant them somewhere where they’ll get plenty of sunlight during the day!

White Clematis ‘Toki’

This flowering vine has gorgeous, scented flowers, perfect for growing over walls or decorating arbors. They can grow quite vigorously, so be sure to prune to prevent self-seeding regularly. For the best blooms, make sure this plant gets lots of sunlight during the day so that it can shine at night!. Their fluttery blooms look just like twinkling stars at night—you’ll love seeing them light up the night during a full moon!

Leucanthemum 'Becky'

Also called the Becky shasta daisy, this hardy cultivar has beautiful, showy flowers that will add bright, romantic blooms to your moon garden! They have the classic daisy aesthetic without requiring much care at all. You can divide this perennial every couple of years and replant it around your garden to expand its moonlight potential. These blooms are perfect for brightening your day and your night!

Garden Phlox

Taller than its cousin, the Creeping Phlox, Garden Phlox produces densely-packed flower panicles—similar to hydrangeas but more delicate—that sit atop their slender, leafy stems. For a sturdy plant, clip the weakest stems from the plant when they are about 6 inches tall, leaving 5-6 of the sturdiest stems. Plant some white Garden Phlox to create the illusion of a blank canvas of white stretching across the landscape. Looking for more white flowers and perennial plants?
