Fall mums, also known as chrysanthemums, are the quintessential flower of autumn. With their vibrant colors, hardy nature, and ability to thrive in cooler temperatures, mums bring full color to gardens, patios, and landscapes as the leaves begin to change. We grow our mums right here in Northwest Arkansas. Our sizes run from small, 4.5" to our massive SUPER Mums. We start them in several rounds, so you'll have fresh, blooming mums all season long.

What Makes Westwood Grown Mums Different?

At Westwood, our mums are grown with exceptional care right here in Northwest Arkansas, ensuring they receive the best possible attention. Our dedicated team checks on the plants multiple times each day, providing them with the precise amount of water, fertilizer, and care they need to grow full and healthy. We begin growing our mums each June, cultivating multiple crops throughout the season so you can find fresh mums in our stores all autumn long.

Unlike some growers who "force" mums into early bloom by covering them with black cloth to mimic shorter days, we allow our mums to bloom naturally. While forced blooms may appear earlier in the season, they often fade quickly when exposed to natural daylight, especially in the heat and longer days. Our mums, however, bloom according to the natural cycle here in Northwest Arkansas, making them uniquely suited to thrive in our region's climate.

How to Choose a Mum at the Garden Center

When selecting a mum, look for plants with blooms that are just beginning to crack open. This stage ensures that you will enjoy vibrant, long-lasting color when you bring them home. While fully bloomed mums provide immediate color, they may only remain in bloom for a few weeks. Additionally, consider the size of the mum that best fits your needs. We offer a range of sizes, including 4", 6", 8" pan mums, and our impressive 12" SuperMums.

How to Use Mums in Your Garden or Home

Mums can be planted directly in the ground, where they will bloom beautifully in the fall. After the first frost, the plants will die back, but with proper care, they should return in the spring and bloom again the following autumn. For best results, it's important to plant mums early, ideally in September or October, to give them time to establish before any freezes. Many gardeners also enjoy using mums as seasonal plants, adding them to planters and containers to enhance their fall decor.

How to Care for Your Mums

Mums are water-loving plants and require frequent watering, typically once or twice a day. To maintain healthy plants, place a saucer under your pot to hold water between waterings, but be sure not to let the roots sit in water for more than a couple of hours. You can fertilize mums up until the buds begin to open, but avoid fertilizing once the plant starts to bloom.
